Last night, after coming in from a few beers and meal out we settled down on the sofa and clicked on Love Film for recently loaded up movies to stream. Up popped End of Watch,ah a cop movie staring the Oscar nominated and BAFTA award winning actor Jake Gyllenhaal, “ah”, I thought “a popcorn fodder car chase buddy movie.” How wrong was I, it had action yes but so much more depth.
The film follows two cops, and their time over a few months working their patrol shift in the ghetto of LA. It’s all shot in very realistic handheld style, which initially was annoying however it really hooks you into the story and give a greater depth to the characters and those they work with.
The characters are successful cops, and their fair minded approach makes them respected by both the police department and the criminals they come into contact with. Unfortunately their success makes them a target for a cartel that is establishing human and drug trafficking in the neighbourhood. We know there’s not going to be a satisfying clink of prison bars against this cartel, however the story is compelling.
The whole casting of this movie is exceptional, no character, no matter how many lines they have have any feel of being one dimensional or superfluous.
The mythology surrounding End of Watch is that the Writer-Director wrote the script in 6 days! He’s also set to be the writer director for the World War 2 movie staring Brad Pit and Transformers actor Shia LaBeouf (hopefully this will stretch Shia’s acting muscles and put it him in a higher acting league)
Watch this movie and you will not be disappointed. Available to buy on Amazon or watch on LoveFilm
