Where on earth have I been?!? Sure I’ve heard about the phenomenal series through various sources, but for some reason it didn’t really compute. However I’m now down series one and half way through season 2 (thank goodness for series box sets) and I’m hooked.
The premise of the show is down at heel and pretty much broken man Walter White (even the name sounds a bit wet) is holding down two jobs, one as an undervalued high school chemistry teacher and part time at a local car wash. His family life isn’t much cop, he has a Disabled teenage son, and a wife who has aspirations to be a writer and is unexpectedly pregnant in her 40s. They don’t have many friends and mainly socialise with his wife’s kleptomaniac sister and her Drugs Enforcement officer husband.
Walter collapses at the car wash and is taken to hospital, where he’s diagnosed with terminal cancer, any treatment available will cost a fortune and isn’t covered on his health cover. He keeps this to himself for a while.
At his surprise 50th birthday, his brother-in-law mentioned that Crystal Meth is being cracked down on in the town, but anyone can make it, and often do, and a drugs bust is about to go down soon. From that point a nugget of an idea is formed and Walters interest is peeked. He asks to attend the bust, the brother-in-law agrees. At the said drugs bust he spots one of his old students escaping the scene, here is where Jesse is introduced.
What follows is the mad cap adventures and mis-adventures of this unlikely duo rising up the drugs career ladder. The creator, Vince Gilligan (of X Files and The Lone Gunmen pedigree) wanted to create a complete anti-hero turning a good man bad, part of the process what to have the character Jesse killed at the end of the first season, however the unlikely duo have some kick ass screen chemistry, and the interesting backstory about Jesse developed (I’m not going to spoil it)
What is really good is that all the characters are interesting, not necessarily likeable, but they’re watchable and you want to know more.
I’ll update you further into the series to how it’s going. But I’m currently hooked, and what makes it even more enjoyable I’ve got plenty of episodes to watch, considering there are five seasons and the final season has 16 episodes. Hurrah! I’ve just got to make sure I don’t find out what happens.
Check out the trailer for Season One. I dare you to watch it and not want to watch it!
What is very unique about this show is that it couldn’t be remade in the UK as of our heath cover is very comprehensive (and free), this amusing cartoon illustrates the point quite admirably.
